The Institute of Advanced Biotechnology (IAB) is a new research institute in the Southern University of Science and Technology (Sustech), Shenzhen, China. IAB was established in early 2022 to advance life sciences research at Sustech. Our work is focused on 1) developing gene editing technologies for functional genomics studies, plant and animal breeding, nucleic acid-based diagnosis, and gene therapy; 2) epigenetics research aimed at understanding DNA methylation dynamics in higher organisms including the “DNA methylation clock” of human aging, and at developing technologies that can help delay aging; and 3) plant stress biology, and integrated genetic, chemical and microbial methods to improve plant resistance to drought, salinity, extreme temperatures and other stresses. Through cutting edge research in these areas, we aim to advance the understanding of the epigenetic control of human aging and other life processes, plant stress resistance mechanisms, and to develop biotechnologies for crop improvement for more abundant and more nutritious food, and for improving human health and longevity.
